Things I Love About Texas

If you’ve been to Texas, raise your hand.

I am sure that every person thinks THEIR state is the best state. It’s good to love where you’re from. Right? I’m actually from California, but I’ve been in Texas a very long time. This month I thought I’d share a list of what I love about the Lone Star State, beginning with the pictures above.

  • The rivers
  • The still wild places
  • Our long, long sunsets
  • The people
  • That we still have so many horses
  • Wildflowers
  • Pecan trees
  • Our Gulf Coast
  • Small towns
  • Fun, exciting cities
  • The beach
  • How big everything is in Texas!
  • Dirt roads
  • The Hill Country
  • The mountains
  • Our state bird — the mockingbird
  • Street dances
  • Rodeos
  • Friday Night Lights (high school football)
  • Our wildlife (I’ve seen bear, deer, javelinas, jack rabbits & more!)

I could go on and on. But it’s your turn. Leave me a comment with 3 things you love about YOUR state. I’d love to hear from you!

    1. Ohio is my state. I appreciate that by the time hurricane winds arrive here in Ohio that they have mellowed down in strength and we usually don’t get the damage from high winds and flooding.
I love living near Cincinnati .
      I love the Cincinnati Reds.
      I love the Cincinnati Bengals.

  2. I live in rural Missouri and enjoy several of the same things you mentioned about loving in TX. We have deer aplenty here, all 4 seasons, beautiful sunsets and sunrises, lots of farmland and wooded areas, rivers, fishing, flowers, a nice growing season for gardening.

  3. I love the beauty of each season change in Northern Indiana. I am close enough for a drive along the coast of Lake Michigan or a visit to Amish country of Shipshewana. Great mix!

  4. Ohio! Living close to Amish country (Holmes County), all 4 seasons, daughter, grandchildren and great grandchildren live close by. I also love Texas! Met my husband at college in Houston and got married there almost 51 years ago!

  5. I was born and raised in Texas and have lived all over the state. I love spring time in Texas with all the beautiful wildflowers that grow in spring!

  6. Michigan (for another week! Moving to Columbus Ohio area)
—newest grandbaby lives here as well as 4 other previous grands! (if I could only take them with)
—the quick changes in weather ( boring if it was warm & sunny all the time😉)
—the German town of Frankenmuth and lovely Mackinac Island

  7. Virginia-the mountains, sitting on the front porch listening to nature and red bud trees in the spring.

  8. I’ve lived in Maine for 20 years now, and I’m still in love with the wide horizon, the ocean and the freshest lobster you can buy!

  9. 1. The Natural Beauty Arkansas scenery can’t be beat. Arkansas contains over 600,000 acres of lakes and 9,700 miles of streams and rivers— it’s obvious why Arkansas is called The Natural State.
    2. Arkansas is the only state with an active diamonds mine where you can hunt for and keeping anything you find. Great family outing!
    3. And my little part of the state is also the Folk Music Capital of the World. The music and the beauty of this small town is why we made this our home and built our forever home.
And just for an added thought –
    4. Sam Walton founded opened the first Wal-Mart store in Rogers, Arkansas. And Arkansas is still their headquarters. Who doesn’t love Wal-Mart. And Arkansas is where Dairy Queen started.

  11. I live in Florida where there is lots to love, including:
    – plenty of sunshine (It’s called “The Sunshine State” for a reason.)
    – no snow shoveling, putting on tons of clothing to go outside, scraping windshields, etc.
    – always feelling like I’m on vacation

  12. I live in a town in between 2 larger cities. I like not being in the hustle all the time, but I am there within minutes when I need to be. When I miss the beach, there is a lake, also within minutes.

  13. I love our spring with all the flowers blooming. I love the fall with the changing leaves. I love all the farmland around us.

  14. Florida is my adopted state. We have lovely sunshine 🌞 – beautiful beaches – many attractions – kind people – family!
My New England home has beautiful Fall weather and colors. 🍁

  15. Adam’s county, Pa has a wonderful abundance of farmland giving us fresh fruits and vegetables all spring, summer, and fall. We live near Gettysburg so history is all around us. We are only an hour from Amish country……talk about farmland!

  16. I like your Indiana Amish Market series. Wildflowers,The mountains, Small towns,Our wildlife,The rivers and more.

  17. I agree Texas is a great state. Our favorite place there is Big Bend. I live in Indiana. It has great variety of terrain – cliffs and hills a in the south and rolling farm fields in the north. Our changing seasons is a positive except for spring tornadoes. Falls in Indiana are lovely. There are lots of small towns, but cities are close enough for shopping. 🙂

  18. I love the pledge and respect we have for the American flag and Texas flag. Also, the stars are bright in the state of Texas (referencing the eclipse) 😊

  19. Arizona. I moved here when I graduated high school. I have left several times, but always came back. I love the desert, the mountains (yes, we have sky islands) and the wildlife.

  20. Right now I am seeing lots of photos of Texas bluebonnets, gorgeous flowers.
I live in Ireland and while I don’t enjoy the rain we’re getting off the Atlantic at present, it does make the land green. We have built heritage older than the Pyramids of Egypt, and literary heritage including Joyce, Wilde, Binchy, Shaw, etc. so there is always plenty to see and read.

  21. I love the ocean.
I love the little towns Down East.
I love the history, the fishermen who had to leave their island and make a home in Promise Land.

  22. We used to live in Texas and I miss the beautiful bluebonnets. We live in Arizona now and I love the weather, the beautiful desert scenery with the mountains and cactus and the canyons and valleys.

  23. Louisiana has the best food. Can I list that 3 times??? We have so much history and beautiful architecture. We also have beaches.
Alabama ‘the beautiful ‘ is my home state, which I love❤️ But I have lived in Louisiana my ch of my life.

  24. I’ve visited the panhandle of TX! Had a blast with friends! Three things I love about Florida? The launches that I can see from my yard; the beaches, the closest of which is the Atlantic Ocean, about 15 to 20 minutes from me, depending on traffic; and when the snowbirds go home!!

  25. I live in Arizona. I love the smell of the desert after it rains, Eegees ( a drink Much better than Icees) and mountains and saguaro cactus.

  26. I live in New York and the Adirondack mountains are so beautiful. Also all the rural areas in Upstate New York.

  27. I have lived in California all of my 79 years…Love the beach, the mountains, and the weather. We have visited Texas many times on road trips…agree is verrrry big…

  28. Well, Vanetta, I was actually born in Amarillo, TX. However, we moved (military family) when I was 3 but I went there once as an adult. I currently live in North East GA. I love all the trees we have, all year round. In the winter we have tall pines everywhere. That way you don’t to much notice all the bare hardwoods, although their silhouette against a blue sky is gorgeous. Right now, being Spring, the flowering trees, azaleas, daffodils, dogwoods – you name it, they’re blooming!

  29. We now live in S. Indiana. In the Ohio Valley. The weather here tends to swing like a pendulum. One thing it is not is boring. This area knows how to storm! And I love a good thunder and lightning storm! Though not the tornadoes. We do get snow but thankfully not much. And I love the changing of the leaves in the fall. Beautiful.

  30. Hi!
I really love my city, Córdoba, located right in the centre of Argentina. It is plenty of lakes, rivers, towns, hills, and turistic places full of History! What I love the most is the amount of trekking activities we can do, and a lot of competitions in the water or running in the mountains! I live in the city but I have a beautiful view of the mountains and I’m really close to them 🙂

  31. Hi Vannetta;
1.I love The New York Knicks
2.I Love The New York Mets
    3. Radio City Music Hall
    Happy Spring
    Marion

  32. Happy Spring Vannetta;
    1.I Love St.Patrick’s Cathedral
2.The Queens Public Library and all the Libraries
    3.The Change Of Seasons.
    Joan

  33. I love that in the winter we do not have lots of cold weather. I would like one good snow in the winter.
I have always lived in Mississippi so I love that most of my immediate and extended family lives even in the same town.
I love the friendliness of Mississippi. We wave at everyone whether we know them or not.

  34. Sweet home Alabama is a beautiful state with lush green forests, small mountains some people would call hills, and flowers galore. We also have Gulf beaches and plenty of sunshine.
BUT… our pride and joy must be THE UNIVERSITY OF ALABAMA! ROLL TIDE. We also have Auburn University, home of the War Eagles. Now this probably doesn’t mean much to many people but if you live here you have to be for one or the other. I can remember going shopping on Saturday and every store you went into had the game playing. If they were Auburn fans they had the Auburn game either on the radio or TV and the same with Alabama fans. I know Texas probably has more Universities than any other state and Alabama has quite a few…but …you still must choose between the Elephant and the Tiger.

  35. Things I loved about TN – cardinals, mockingbirds, peonies, lilacs, redbuds, trees and flowers in bloom. And even some of the rain. Things I love about CO – snow, mountains, wildlife, our home, being with family, and did I mention snow.

  36. Gulf Shores/Gulf State Park, Alabama Football and now Alabama basketball is in the final four for the first time ever!
I got to visit Texas a couple of years ago on our 3 month west RV trip.

  37. I’m from York, Pennsylvania
1 – Home of the original York peppermint patty
2 – Across the river from Lancaster county, which means Amish people and food
3 – Lots of snack food is made here, like Martin’s chips

I must say that I had the best filet mignon in Texas!

  38. I’m from Missouri and I love the Ozark Mountains, the beautiful rural areas, the St Louis Zoo and surrounding Forest Park, especially the Muny!

  39. Your neighbor to the north, across the Red River, Oklahoma…we are home to Braum’s Ice Cream and Dairy, who has the best ice cream in the world (if you know, you know…), we are home to some great musicians, actors and athletes, and we can get all four seasons in in a week’s time span.

  40. I live in MS! I love the small town feel of neighbor helping neighbor, the weather is usually very mild and love all the history about my state

  41. I’m a Native Texan and love the property in Central Texas that has been in our family since 1879, that the land hasn’t changed much since I would visit my grandmother and the flowers she planted 80 years ago still bloom voluntarily, and the blue bonnets.

  42. Youth spent in Iowa. Then lived in So. Calif until I met my future husband who lived in Eastern Washington. Hands down, Eastern Washington is the best! Mountains, beautiful lakes, clean air, tons of wildlife, and moderate 4 seasons. I would like to visit Texas someday, especially after seeing your photos.

  43. I am in the Show Me State of Missouri ! I love how we can have winter, spring and summer weather all in the same day. Missouri has some beautiful , restful places to relax . It is also filled with cities of great history. Not to mention an awesome football team ! GO CHIEFS !

  44. What I love about my state North Carolina is:
    1. The beautiful beaches
    2. The awesome mountains
    3. The small towns.. yes I live in one.

  45. I Live in Ohio so I Love The OHIO State Buckeyes, Love The Cardinal Birds and Cincinnati Reds and I love the Spring Season Have a Great Day!

  46. I live in Washington State and I love it here! I love having all 4 seasons, complete with snow! I love living in farmland country with crops everywhere. And I love that we have both mountains and ocean shores along with lakes and rivers! I could go on and on. This is truly a beautiful state!

  47. I have lived in a Fort Worth. Texas for about a year and a half. The people are friendly and polite. I’ve lived in several states and this one is great!

  48. I have lived in Texas for 70 years. Born and raised! 2 generations have followed me so far. I expect before I’m gone, there will be another.
What I love? I, too, love the horses. I have 2 horses and a donkey. They need no special care since the weather is so mild. Their shed is their go-to place in inclement weather, which doesn’t seem to be that often. I like that they have 17 acres of mostly natural grassland and towering oaks and elms.
The wildflowers are abundant this spring. There is nothing prettier than acres and acres of undisturbed flowers in their native environment.
I love the diversity of this great state. From mountains, to valleys, to plains. The rivers and lakes provide a cool respite during those long summer months. And if you are brave enough, you can take a dip in the ocean, if you so desire. The older I get, the less inclined I am to wander too far from the shore.
The people here are like no other. We have a commonality here in Texas. We think it’s the best state and mostly, people are extra kind to each other and go out of their way to help others.
This state allowed me to achieve multiple degrees with tuition rates that were very reasonable. For that I am grateful! Please be kind to people who have adopted our state as their own. They came here because it’s the best!!!

  49. I live in Las Vegas, NV. While I don’t know much about the rest of the state, I love the convenience of living in the city, but where we live has a little bit of a small town feel. We live on a cul-de-sac, and we know almost all of our neighbors. The kids play in the street. It’s awesome!

I love that the Las Vegas valley is surrounded by mountains. The beauty of the mountains definitely makes the brown of the desert much more bearable.

Red Rock Canyon. We live about 20 minutes from Red Rock Canyon, and it is absolutely beautiful. There is a 13 mile scenic loop, and you can also hike there.

  50. Your new website is: colorful, appealing, comprehensive (regarding you, and your books) and user-friendly (easy to navigate)!
What I love about my state (Florida) is: the oceans, year-round flowers, friendly people and my church!

  51. I spent my first 20 years in Southern Illinois and still love the rolling hills and farms. I went from there to Oklahoma and then on to Texas, where part of my heart still resides. I loved everything about Texas and have so many fond memories of rodeos and the Fort Worth Stockyard. Most of all, I love the people. Now we reside in Washington state and I do love the mountains, the seashore and the Columbia River Gorge. The biggest draw though was our daughter and grandson! I love living close to them! ❤️

  52. Thank you so much for the book – I am thoroughly enjoying the story!
I love many things about Texas too and have since we first visited San Antone in 2006 when Son started BT at Lackland AFB. Let’s see, we were absolutely enthralled by the North Hill Country, enchanted by Natural Bridge caverns, enjoyed shopping downtown, trekking River Walk, and perusing all the museums and restaurants and SO much more! Most of all I loved the people! Never have we been treated rudely or impatiently. Everyone we have ever interacted with has been kind and helpful.
We need to visit some of your favorite places Vanetta!
Son is back in SA now and I’ve loved revisiting everything again so many years later and where there are changes, they are for the better!
Our home is in an area of southern Indiana, which resembles a desert. In our 29 years here on the farm we’ve planted most of the acreage in trees, and it is beautiful. Our pets and livestock love it. Although we’re surrounded by farmland and border the river, every season here displays new beauty. We care for the wildlife here and they love refuges we’ve installed. We don’t always appreciate the pruning the deer believe benefits our gardens but they’re safe here.
    Come visit sometime!

  53. The Ozarks…. Yep I’m from Missouri. It definitely is the Show ME state. You don’t have to go far to see its beauty and history. Not to mention you can travel it all on Rt 66. Then of course you have several big cities Kansas City, St. Louis, Springfield, Branson. Jefferson City. Of course, if you just want a getaway, Missouri is filled with those too. Lots of lakes and fishing. Fall is the prettiest time of the year. <3
