All Things Amish – Quilt Shows

I haven’t had the pleasure of attending one of the big quilt shows in Amish country. I know Shipshewana has one, and I plan to go very soon. Until then, I’ve been attending quilt shows in the Texas area, and they are a lot of fun. I’m learning that quilters are readers. You can see the list of quilt shows I will be attending in the future here. While I’m selling books at quilt shows, I shop. It’s a natural thing to do. I buy things that guild members have made, and I participate in the silent auctions which always benefit a local charity.

This week I’d like to give away a few goodies related to  A Wedding for DSCN8819Julia. I’d also like to let you pick your choice of items from the quilt show I attended last weekend in Ellis County.

Today’s prize includes —

  • Autographed copy of A Wedding for Julia
  • Amish made soap (Lily of the Valley)
  • Promises from the Psalms
  • Choice of quilted items (from top going clockwise they are–a potholder, a kindle cover, a small clutch bag, quilted coasters.

I finished reading your book (I got the ebook even though I’d won an authographed copy of) “A Wedding for Julia” last night. It was awesome. I felt I was right there with her and all the characters throughout the whole book.

I think it is super you’re having this giveaway. We have an Amish ….or maybe several… community about 100 miles south of where I currently live. They sell Amish butter at a stand on the side of the road. It is supberb. I’ll need to see if someone can direct me to their community so I can check out their crafts.

I would like to think I would be a winner and would choose the Kindle cover. I

I don’t live that far from Paducah, Kentucky where there is a quilt show. One of these days I hope to make it there. I belong to a quilting guild. Have been machine quilting for several years now….and love it.

When my daughter lived in Kansas (I believe it was), there was a quilting history museum and we thought about going to see it. I wish we had. I grew up sleeping under quilts (not like the beautiful Amish quilts, though) which my grandparents had made from old clothing scraps. they really didn’t have much design, but the beauty was in the desire to produce something to warm their families. We also had real feather pillows. Those feathers were OLD OLD OLD. My mother would change the “ticking” on them from time to time, but she carefully removed the feathers from the old pillows ticking and put them in the new ticking. We think, in horror, of the germs and all that those feather must surely have held. However, when you think that my grandparents were the children of civil war survivors, my grandparents and parents had been through WWI and WWII and The Great Depression, it is easier to understand how they got rid of NOTHING that still was usable.

It wasn’t until she was halfway home that she realized she hadn’t quite spoken the truth. She had given marriage some consideration and with one of the men Bishop Atlee had mentioned. The question was whether she had the courage to do anything about it.

Loved this quote ~ so much for thought!

I have just discovered your books. I have read the first 2 Shipshewana Amish mysteries. I just love them! I found a posting for them on Pinterest. I hope you will continue writing more in this series. My husband and I were able to visit several Amish towns in Pennsylvania a few years ago. I am a quilter and have always been interested in all things Amish. We were very fortunate to meet and visit an Amish family and their farm.

  45. Charlotte Kay Saltzman

  46. Melinda WORD

Your books are so rich in detail and your characters wonderfully complex; please tell me you are going to write more Shipshe mysteries.
I am reconnecting with memories of my childhood: I remember the church ladies gathering at my “Mama John’s” house to quilt, just like these do. I was 5 or younger (early 1950’s) and the quilt frame took up the entire living room. She quilted for years, then as that became harder for her to do, she still made tops .
There is truly a sisterhood among women who connect this way–all aspects of it nourishes our souls!! Readers do the same—Keep the stories coming–Thanks, Melinda Word
